Ruddersafe makes auxiliary rudders for outboard motors and Volvo Penta Z-drives. There are six variants, each suited to a different boat length. Use the table below to find the right type for your boat.
In brief: Type 2 is suitable for boats up to 6.5 metres. Type 3 fits boats up to 8.5 metres. Type 4 is for boats 8.5 metres and longer. For Volvo Penta Z-drives, dedicated variants are available based on the same length categories.

Type 2, 3 or 4: how do I choose?
The choice between Standard types depends exclusively on the length of your boat:
- Type 2 — for boats up to 6.5 metres (21 ft)
- Type 3 — for boats up to 8.5 metres (28 ft)
- Type 4 — for boats 8.5 metres (28 ft) and longer
Do you have a Volvo Penta Z-drive or duoprop?
For Volvo Penta Z-drives and duoprop drives, there are dedicated types with a special bracket mount. Again, boat length is the only selection criterion:
- Volvo Penta Type 2 — for boats up to 6.5 metres
- Volvo Penta Type 3 — for boats up to 8.5 metres
- Volvo Penta Type 4 — for boats 8.5 metres and longer
Does Ruddersafe work with twin motors?
Yes. With a twin outboard configuration, one Ruddersafe on the port motor (left) is sufficient in most cases. The rudder works independently of the motor position.
Does Ruddersafe work when reversing?
Yes — that is one of its key strengths. The Ruddersafe auxiliary rudder provides steering force when reversing, something almost impossible with a bare outboard motor.
How difficult is it to fit?
You can fit a Ruddersafe yourself in approximately 20 minutes with a standard spanner, without drilling anywhere on the boat. The brackets clamp onto the existing motor bracket. See the full installation guide on our installation page.
Cheaper than Bol.com?
Yes. Ruddersafe-Shop.com is an official Ruddersafe dealer — we purchase directly from the manufacturer. Our prices are consistently lower than on marketplaces such as Bol.com, and you have direct contact with the supplier for any questions.
