Which Ruddersafe type fits my outboard motor?

Ruddersafe has three standard types for outboard motors, selected based on your boat length: Type 2 (boats up to 6.5 metres), Type 3 (boats up to 8.5 metres), and Type 4 (boats of 8.5 metres and longer). If in doubt, please contact us via the webshop.

Do I need a special Ruddersafe type for a Volvo Penta sterndrive?

Yes. For Volvo Penta sterndrives and duoprops there are separate types: Volvo Penta Type 2 (€220.00, boats up to 6.5 m), Type 3 (€235.00, boats up to 8.5 m), and Type 4 (€270.00, boats of 8.5 m and longer). These feature a different bracket mounting than the standard types.

Does Ruddersafe also work with two outboard motors?

Yes. In a twin-engine setup, you mount one Ruddersafe on the port motor (left) in most cases. The auxiliary rudder improves the steering response of both engines.

Can I install Ruddersafe myself?

Yes. Installation takes an average of 20 minutes with a standard spanner. No drilling into the boat is required. The brackets clamp onto the existing bracket of your outboard motor.

Does Ruddersafe also work when reversing?

Yes. Ruddersafe provides steering response in reverse as well, making manoeuvring near the jetty significantly easier.

Does Ruddersafe work on a small outboard motor of 2.5 or 3.5 hp?

Yes. The sole selection criterion is the length of your boat, not the engine horsepower. Type 2 fits boats up to 6.5 metres, regardless of whether your motor is 2.5 hp or 60 hp.

How quickly is Ruddersafe delivered and are there shipping costs?

Can I return Ruddersafe if it does not fit?

Yes. You have a 14-day cooling-off period (statutory right of withdrawal). Provided the packaging is intact and the product is returned unused, you will receive a full refund of the purchase price.

Does Ruddersafe also work on an inflatable boat or RIB?

Ruddersafe is designed for rigid boats with an outboard motor on a standard transom/bracket. On most soft-transom inflatable boats, installation is not possible because the transom lacks the required rigidity. When in doubt, contact us via the webshop.

Type 2, 3 or 4: how do I choose?

The choice between Standard types depends solely on the length of your boat:

Type 2 — for boats up to 6.5 metres (21 feet)
Type 3 — for boats up to 8.5 metres (28 feet)
Type 4 — for boats of 8.5 metres (28 feet) and longer

Do you have a Volvo Penta sterndrive or duoprop?

For Volvo Penta sterndrives and duoprop drives, dedicated types with a special bracket mounting are available. Boat length also applies as the selection criterion here:

Volvo Penta Type 2 — for boats up to 6.5 metres
Volvo Penta Type 3 — for boats up to 8.5 metres
Volvo Penta Type 4 — for boats of 8.5 metres and longer

Does Ruddersafe also work with twin engines?

Yes. In a dual-engine configuration (two outboard motors side by side), one Ruddersafe mounted on the port engine (left) is sufficient in most cases. The rudder operates independently of engine position.

Is Ruddersafe also suitable for use in reverse?

Yes, that is precisely one of its key strengths. The Ruddersafe auxiliary rudder provides steering power even in reverse — something virtually impossible with outboard motors without an auxiliary rudder.
