Which Ruddersafe type fits my outboard motor?

Ruddersafe has three standard types for outboard motors, chosen based on the length of your boat: Type 2 (boats up to 6.5 metres), Type 3 (boats up to 8.5 metres) and Type 4 (boats 8.5 metres and longer). When in doubt, contact us via the webshop.

Do I need a special Ruddersafe type for a Volvo Penta Z-drive?

Yes. For Volvo Penta Z-drives and duoprop drives there are dedicated types: Volvo Penta Type 2 (boats up to 6.5 m), Type 3 (up to 8.5 m) and Type 4 (8.5 m and longer). These use a different bracket mount to the standard types.

Does Ruddersafe work with twin outboard motors?

Yes. With a twin motor setup, one Ruddersafe on the port motor (left) is sufficient in most cases. The auxiliary rudder influences steering force across both motors.

Can I fit Ruddersafe myself?

Yes. Fitting takes approximately 20 minutes with a standard spanner. No drilling into the boat is required. The brackets clamp onto the existing motor bracket of your outboard motor.

Does Ruddersafe work with a small outboard motor of 2.5 or 3.5 hp?

Yes. The only selection criterion is the length of your boat, not the engine power. Type 2 fits boats up to 6.5 metres, regardless of whether your engine is 2.5 hp or 60 hp.

Does Ruddersafe work on a rubber dinghy or inflatable boat?

Ruddersafe is designed for rigid boats with an outboard motor on a standard motor bracket. On most rubber dinghies, installation is not possible because the bracket lacks the required stability. Contact us if in doubt.

Type 2, 3 or 4: how do I choose?

The choice between Standard types depends exclusively on the length of your boat:

Type 2 — for boats up to 6.5 metres (21 ft)
Type 3 — for boats up to 8.5 metres (28 ft)
Type 4 — for boats 8.5 metres (28 ft) and longer

Do you have a Volvo Penta Z-drive or duoprop?

For Volvo Penta Z-drives and duoprop drives, there are dedicated types with a special bracket mount. Again, boat length is the only selection criterion:

Volvo Penta Type 2 — for boats up to 6.5 metres
Volvo Penta Type 3 — for boats up to 8.5 metres
